City OKs Concept Of Gate At Sycamore Park Entrance

All this came up when the Malibu City Council on Monday considered the Sycamore Park request to be allowed to put in a gate on the private street.
Malibu Mayor Rick Mullen … himself has been victorious in a similar lawsuit in Ramirez Canyon …
He told the MRCA that they should work with the city to improve access to public trails … but bypass private residences.
City council woman Laura Rosenthal agreed.
ROSENTHAL :28 QQQ; [[[APPLAUSE FADEOUT]]].
“This is not about public access … this is not about public trails.
“It’s about accessing those trails thru private neighborhoods.
“Find another way to access them, so you’re not going thru neighborhoods and destroying these neighborhoods.
And we will HELP you do that, if you want.
“We want to open that up.
“But we cannot do it that way.”
APPLAUSE FADEOUT.
With that … the city council said the gate should be approved city bureaucrats as fast as possible.
And as we reported yesterday .. the city has also just sued the M R C A … on the issue of the new park built without a city coastal development permit.
But the city has refused to jump into the legal fray over the question … of if the M R C A has the right to send the general public up and down what it acknowledges to be a private street.
