City May Add Glass Wall, Security Guard at Library

Written by on March 11, 2019

Worries about the numbers of homeless people at the Malibu Library continue. And the city council may hire another security guard down there.

Some parents say they are no longer attending programs for their kids at the Civic Center library because of the number of homeless people that they encounter in the facility.

Some of them … violent.

Others … looking at porn on the computers.

The 2018 library Needs Assessment showed that the community has safety concerns regarding the number of library patrons experiencing homelessness.

The City has already hired one dedicated security guard to address safety concerns at the library.

Tonight … the city council will decide on hiring an additional security guard to patrol the library and surrounding area …

Staff is also recommending that some sort of enclosure be installed around the children’s area, such as a transparent half wall.

This would provide a barrier between the children’s reading area and the rest of the library.

And the county … meanwhile … plans a region-wide pilot program to embed full-time mental health professionals in all L-A County Libraries.

This partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health will offer outreach mental health services to homeless individuals.

As part of this program, a mental health professional will be assigned to work out of the Malibu Library.
