MRCA Malibu Campground Plans Slink Into View

The Malibu Times has discovered that the MRCA has quietly begun floating its plan for a large campground just above Malibu … for public comment.
As quietly as possible … the Mountain Recreation Conversation Authority has opened public comment on its plans for the campgrounds in the mountains west of Pepperdine.
It’s a scoping announcement … a quiet public notice that the agency os about to start environmental review for the campground.
Officially … it’s a request to hear what type of concerns the public wants evaluated.
The MRCA plan would put a parking lot for up to 90 vehicles … public restrooms and trailhead amenities on the western part of the parcel … above Latigo Canyon.
The eastern part of the property … above the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue … would have 25 tent pad sites, covered dining and kitchen areas, a covered group gathering area and other buildings.
An enclosed cooking facility might be included … because the campground area is a major fire concern for residents below.
The M R C A says it has been working with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to develop the proposed Project to meet or exceed stringent fire safety standards for the Santa Monica Mountains.
Camping would be by reservation only, and MRCA staff would be onsite to supervise all camping activities.
And MRCA firefighters and firefighting equipment would be stationed onsite during group camping events.
Access to all this would be up Puerco Canyon Road … a very narrow and steep one-lane route.
All this would be outside the city limits … except the road … which is city property.
It’s not clear where the M R C A has posted the official notice of the planned campground scoping.
It’s not on their website … as required by law.
