LA County supervisors will vote Tuesday on spending $1.9 million for a guardrail at the exact location where a motorist’s car went off Malibu Canyon Road last Wednesday, killing her.
Tracy Vancura, 63. of Camarillo, was thrown from the vehicle and found dead at the scene, according to the L.A. Department of Medical Examiner.
Her Silver Scion was spotted shooting off Malibu Canyon Road into a deep part of the canyon last night.
The CHP is investigating what was either a tragic crash … or a possible tragic suicide.
One driver told Channel 5 he was driving though the canyon at 5:30 when he “saw some bystanders waving their hands and asking for help and said, ‘The car went down!’”
William Mbema said he and those bystanders climbed down the steep canyon wall.
“We rushed down the hill and as we got closer, we saw big tree branches were folded over the car and we saw a body lying there.”
The person had been thrown from the silver Toyota Scion.
No name has been released yet.
Malibu Canyon Road was closed from 5:30 to about 8.
Next Tuesday, the LA County Board of Supervisors will meet to consider a $1.9 million dollar contract to build about a third of a mile of guardrails along this very section of Malibu Canyon Road.
The project has been in the works for years.
LA County built the road in the 1950s using county jail prisoners…. and there are only low rock walls protecting vehicles from sheer cliffs. And there are stretches of road where there are no barriers at all between Malibu Canyon Road and the cliff …. 200 feet down.
The proposed project will install about 1,240 feet of guardrail on Malibu Canyon Road from the old Honor Rancho turnout south … at the crest of the hill;.
The work is anticipated to start this August 2024 and be completed by January 2025.
