Should the old fire breaks in the Santa Monica Mountains be reactivated???
First cut on the mountain tops 70 years ago … the fire breaks have not been cut clear in decades.
Some Malibu-area residents are reactivating their decade old call to build a fire defense system of sorts above Malibu.
To not only clear the fire breaks ,,, but to put sprinklers and water tanks up there.
We’ve told you about the Coalition for Fire Safety Communities … and how its volunteers believe that the old firebreaks on the ridge tops above Malibu shoukld be reestablished.
And further …. they should be equipped with massive water storage and sprinkler systems … for use in fires.
Don’t scoff.
That’s what was used to save the Calamigos Ranch.
Tens of thousands of gallons were pumped into the air … atomized … as the Woolsey Fire front approached.
It worked.
The coalition wants to explain the system to Malibu residents … in hope of building support for their idea.
15 years ago … some firefighters questioned the plan … and said it would not work any major firestorm.
The coalition for fire safety communities of a public meeting to present its plan later this month.
That’s tomorrow … Wednesday, 6 to 8:30 p.m.
At the Hughes Research Lab.
