Ballistics Tests May Link Burglar To Murder, Sheriff’s Opponent Pounces

Ballistics tests and other evidence will be the key … to determining if the arrest of A suspected burglar in Malibu Canyon yesterday can be linked to the mysterious murder of a camper at a nearby park last June.
Sheriff’s deputies flooded the rough mountains North of Mulholland Highway and west of Malibu Canyon Las Virgenes Road … the area where they believed a man was holed up with a rifle.
This man had been breaking into commercial buildings and offices … and have been spotted with a rifle at one of the burglaries.
Boot prints were spotted … deputies flooded a narrow Canyon … and the suspect was spotted.
LA County Sheriff Jim McDonald picks up the story.
NEWSCART 77858 ARREST MCDONNELL :14 QQQ:LOST HILLS SHERIFF’S STATION.
“After a few tense moments of communicating with a suspect, he opted to surrender and was taken into custody around 3:20 this afternoon.
“The rifle was recovered and the sheriff was transported to the lost Hills Sheriff station.”
43 year old Anthony Rauda was arrested … and booked on felony weapons charges.
The sheriff said Rauda was an ex con who was forbidden from carrying a gun.
Additional charges related to burglaries we’re pending.
But the giant question … is router and his rifle connected to the mysterious shooting of Tristan Baudette … just a half mile away from the arrest location at the campground in Malibu Creek State Park.
Sheriff Jim McDonnell:
NEWSCART 77864 MCDONNELL HOMICIDE :09 QQQ: THE REST OF THE TEAM.
“We can’t say no at this point, certainly that is going to be part of the ongoing investigation, homicide is working with the rest of the team.”
Sheriff Jim McDonnell at last night’s news conference at the hall of justice in Los Angeles.
Rauda is being held without bail.
The campground remains closed.

McDonnell’s opponent in the election … Alex Villanueva, … is seizin g on the Malibu Creek murder as a campaign issue.
Villanueva has scheduled a news conference at noon today … to allege what his press agent calls a double-digit rise in violent crime in Malibu.
Villanueva alleges that “Sheriff Jim McDonnell’s failure to handle the events to put a halt to criminal activity” and says he has a “lack of transparency with Malibu residents.’’
We will cover that news conference … and toss a few questions.
