Allowing 10 Homeless Campers At Beachfront Lot Goes Before Public Safety Comm Tonight

Written by on June 5, 2019

Members of the Malibu Homelessness Working Group will appear before the Malibu city public works commission this afternoon at 5.

They are proposing that 10 homeless people sleeping in their cars in Malibu be allowed to park every night …

This would be in the parking lot at Dan Blocker Beach … near Latigo Shores.

The working group is hoping the Public Safety Commission will sign off on the concept.

Exact details have not been provided … but the working group says the parking lot would apparently be used overnights only …  with homeless people supposed to drive away every morning.

The working group says the Dan Blocker parking lot … near P C H at Latigo Shores Drive … is the best place in town for a homeless encampment on a permanent basis.

It is not located directly next to a residence or business, and it has good lighting, visibility, and a restroom.

The Malibu Homeless Outreach Team says there are currently as many as ten individuals living in their cars in Malibu … who would be qualified candidates for this program.

While there are no houses right next door … there are houses just a little bit up and down the beach.

It does not appear that those residents have been notified about the plan.

And there is great anger in Malibu about the number of ramshackle RVs and campers parked just east of the city limits near Topanga Beach.

The Public Safety Commission meets at 5 o’clock Wednesday at City Hall.
