Activists Push Discredited 5G Rumors Onto Malibu City Council Agenda, City Expert Says Nothing Should Be Done

Malibu is unable to do anything about 5 G communications antennas.
That is the conclusion of a consultant … hired by the City of Malibu … as a small and vocal group clamors for a moratorium on new cell antennas.
The local activists are armed with what the national news media calls conspiracy theory science.
Q-anon and Russian troll farms are spreading the word … 5G is bad.
The activists say there are known health effects like cancer, neurological illness, headaches, loss of energy, heart arrhythmia, kidney problems, high blood pressure, stroke.
Russia propaganda “is linking 5G signals to brain cancer, infertility, autism, heart tumors and Alzheimer’s disease — claims that lack scientific support.”
So concludes the New York Times.
5-G is a repurposing of frequencies that used to be used for high-power television stations … to individual communications.
Those individual transmitters emit a tiny fraction of the radiation sent out by the sun.
Nevertheless … the activists are pushing the city to slap a moratorium on new communications sites.
They are using discredited reports … pushed by internet trolls in Russia … pushed by Q-anon … according to respected and no-nonsense news agencies.
So … the Malibu city council has paid an expert for a report.
These are the words of Jonathan Kramer … a nationally known telecommunications expert hired by the City of Malibu.
These are his words:
“The Spectrum Act takes away portions of local authority in considering whether to approve cell site modifications and expansions.
“The FCC’s shot clock rules … coupled with a 2015 California state law … deem almost all wireless projects automatically approved for construction … if a local government fails to make a decision on a wireless site application within the 60 day shot clock window.
“Essentially, a local government may adopt a moratorium, but the shot clocks and automatic approvals are unaffected by the local moratorium.
“Malibu is barred from considering whether any current or future radio emissions are safe.
“A determination of RF emissions safety is a job solely assigned by Congress to the FCC.
“This is why, even when faced by very concerned citizens, a local jurisdiction cannot deny a cell site project if the only basis for the denial is due to public concerns about the RF emissions. That is the settled law, and it is why any opinion regarding whether 5G (or any other “G”) is safe is outside the bounds for a local government.”
Some Malibu residents are pointing out that improved wireless communications are a really good idea … in Malibu.
Many homes are not connected to high speed internet … because the two phone companies will nto extend fiber or coax un into canyon areas.
Others point out that trying to fight an impossible battle on well settled law … with the federal government … would be a total waste of taxpayer money.
Not to mention the fact that enacting a moratorium would simply give the telecommunciations companies the power to do whatever they want … by simply bypassing Malibu aesthetic regulations and putting in what they want … where they want.
