It’s ‘Malibu Elementary School’ Now – The Point Dume School Name Is Retired

The school formerly known as Point Dume Elementary is now renamed.

By a 6 to nothing vote last night … it’s now Malibu Elementary School.

The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District ratified the decision made by teachers … and parents … to call the campus Malibu Elementary School.

Some city council members had opposed the move … and it infuriated many Point Dume residents.

The district’s Malibu director … Isaac Burgess … told the school board last night that officials grappled with coming up with a new name.

Continuing with the current name … impossible for several reasons … he said.

“Can we call it the New School at Point Dume?

“Could it be Juan Cabrillo?

“Can it be some variation of that, a marine science?

“So we listened to that and began to share that clarity around.

“What could be in the name and what could not be in the name.

“And that was a crucial point.

“And I just want to make sure that we let the community know that we did lesson we did here we didn’t revisited, and we do understand that we have very unique schools, all schools that we are merging. And we know that there are strong ties there, but we knew the importance of coming up with a new school name but involving all the stakeholders in thar.

“So I just wanted to make sure that we did communicate tonight that we did hear the community, and we know that, we will continue to work together to make sure that everyone embraces the new school name as much as they possibly can.”

Malibu school board member Craig Foster heartily endorsed the new name .. Malibu Elementary School … at last night’s board meeting.

“The process used with the Malibu elementary school was a really thoughtful process that was informed along the way with —- what did you call it — lessons learned.

But it was a thoughtful process that actually worked quite well, that nuanced process I thought it worked well for the naming of the school, which is something that people feel very personally.”

The new school name … Malibu Elementary School … takes effect today.
