Plan To Chop 1/3 Of Park Site Off For Fire Station Goes Up For Comment Wed

The controversial plan to sell two acres of city land at the civic center to the fire department … for use as a new central Malibu fire station … will go before an unusual agglomeration of city commissions tomorrow.
The proposal is to chop off the lower two acres of the Chili Cook Off Site … the vacant land just purchased by the city along Civic Center Way .. west of the courthouse complex.
At the time it was purchased … city council members and most of the public had assumed that land would become playing fields … as it is the for all practical purposes the only flat land suitable for parks use in the city.
Parks advocates were caught by surprise when the City manager proposed selling part of the land to the county … for use as a very large fire station.
Critics points out that the county owns an abandoned courthouse structure next door … next to an abandoned helipad and large fenced parking lot.
That would ne agood place for a fire station … they said.
Critics have also pointed out that the city owns vacant land elsewhere that could be used for the fire station … instead of the prime parks location.
Plus … since the fire department is paying cash value for the and … there are other vacant lots in the heart of Malibu
The city council handed that hot potato over to a joint meeting of the Public Safety, Parks and Recreation and Cultural Affairs commissions.
The joint meeting is at city Hall at 5:30 tomorrow night.

And just down the hall … don’t forget … is that water conservation workshop.
That’s from 6 to 8.
