Malibu High Planners Told ‘There’s An Ocean There – Use it’

The new Malibu High School and Middle School should not turn their backs on the million dollar ocean view …

That was the consensus at last night’s meeting …. on what the makeover of the campus should look like.

Parent Ann Shurgot got a round of applause from the 40 people at the planning meeting last night.

She urged that the placement and design of buildings must take into account ocean views and breezes.

“I’m seeing all the plans – maybe be necessity – putting parking on the exterior of the campus, to preserve security.

“But I wish that would be taken into account.

“Because that’s what people move to Malibu for, that’s what brings them peace.”

The view, just staring at water, has so many benefits.”

Students were also in the crowd … and there was buzz about the concepts to give the high school and middle school separate entrances and quad gathering areas.

Isabella Burke was spotted with a group of her friends … looking at two of the four broad concepts presented last night.

“I like D a lot, and I like C.

REPORTER: “Why do you like D a lot?

ISABELLA: “Because it’s more separated and high schoolers are different from middle schoolers a lot,.

“So they need separate spaces to learn and think.”

But back to that million dollar ocean view.

Malibu Park resident Carla McCloskey stood outside the Juan Cabrillo last night …

She looked at the ocean …

CARLA: “There are some great some great ideas, and they seem to be open to making this really a wonderful environment and learning area, rather than a traditional Gulag school.

REPORTER: “Now we’re standing outside the cafeteria here at Juan Cabrillo, with a beautiful ocean view which is hidden behind two dumpsters, a mop and a loading dock. Actually three dumpsters. You think they should plan to avoid that?”

CARLA: “I think that would be great.

“We’ve mentioned this amazing view, that we don’t take advantage of at all.

“And I think in the past the idea of a child looking out the window and being inspired was considered ‘oh, they’re daydreaming, we don’t want them to do that.’

“And I do understand that there are security considerations these days that we have to consider, but I think such open air learning and environmental and appreciation is fabulous.”

The concepts presented last night will now go to the planners … who will come up with recommendations on where to put the buildings.

That will go to the school board this fall.

After a decision is made on that … actual design of the buildings will happen next winter.

Construction of the new campus will require passage of another bond issue … completion is 6 to 8 years away.
