A state senator has introduced a bill that would take away the ability of parents to go doctor shopping find find a way to prevent their children from being immunized against childhood diseases.
The proposed law would require please state Department of Public Health to approve every single request for a medical exemption from immunization requirements.
Malibu is a hotbed of parents who refused to allow their children to be immunized … according to statistics.
The law comes from the same legislators … including Malibu-area senators … who several years ago got a aw that repealed a parent’s personal belief exemption from immunizations.
Parents can no longer claim that their children cannot be vaccinated against diseases including measles, mumps, chickenpox, tetanus, whooping cough and rubella.
The only children who can go without vaccines now are those with medical exemptions and those who are schooled at home.
The proposed new bill would restrict that.
It would also mandate the creation of a statewide database of medical exemptions, including those that doctors have already approved.
State and local public health officers would have access to the database and could revoke exemptions that do not meet the new guidelines.
The author of this bill is also a pediatrician.
Senator Richard Pan of Sacramento says the change is necessary to combat doctors who sell fraudulent medical exemptions to parents.
This report is based on a story on the San Francisco Chronicle.
