Amazing Dolphin Awards Winners List Too Big To Say On Radio

Written by on March 11, 2019

The Malibu Times Dolphin Awards banquet was Sunday … a unique Malibu event that one really needs to see to believe.

Publishers Arnold York and Karen Portugal York have hosted the event for decades.

Volunteers … heroes … all recognized for selfless work for the community’s behalf.

This year’s nominees list is impossible to read on the radio.

That’s because the first award went to the 200 plus Malibu fire heroes.

The woman and men who picked up garden hoses and shovels … to save thousands of homes … as the scary and confusing smoke and fire arrived.

Businesses were honored … for feeding firefighters … police and residents during the firefight … including Duke’s.

Also … Nina Hungerland ….  Isabella Sodeqvist and Sebastian Soderqvist … the youth recipients for their work during and after the fire.

The Pepperdine University student journalists were honored for their work on the Borderline mass gunfire incident … which killed a Pepperdine student … and the next day’s Woolsey Fire.

Johanna Spinks  … the artists behind the Faces Of Malibu was honored …

As was Kasey Earnest, executive director of the Malibu Boys and Girls Club

Andrew Benton … the retiring Pepperdine University president.

And Lt. Jim Royal … the longtime Malibu community liaison from the sheirff’s office … who was transferred out for political reasons.

Paul Grisanti … a Malibu real estate agent … won a dolphin.

Grisanti has worked for more than a decade … battling county bureaucrats to improve the water supply system for Malibu houses and people.

And … KBUU was granted the Harvey Baskin Memorial Award for Outstanding Business Citizen of the Year … a very much appreciated award that leaves us humbled.

The Dolphin Foundation also contributed 1 thousand dollars towards the new KBUU solar transmitter and battery, a figure matched on the spot by a commitment from the Malibu Foundation.
