Fire Chief Says Fire Code Means Some Malibu Houses Cannot Be Rebuilt

Los Angeles fire chief Daryl Osby says the department will not allow some houses in Malibu to be rebuilt.

The chief says state fire codes will not be waived if a house cannot meet newer fire code requirements.

They are going to have to meet current code.

That means water and access. You know some people may not be able to meet that code because it is going require certain driveway wits end access to their home

Or certain gallons per minute as it relates to the fire flow to their house.

They are going to have upgraded building features which are going to be costly.

And then we are going to have conversations about some of the footprints that people bill, are they really safe footprints to rebuild in?

REPORTER: “So you are telling people you may not get to rebuild your house?

OSBY: “I can’t speak the houses right now in Malibu, but I can speak in past experiences, there have been situations where people have been unable to build.

So … the big question in Malibu for the L A fire chief … did the fire department let Malibu burn?
Daryl Osby tells KBUU no.

He had every available firefighter and every available fire truck in action.
