Laura Rosenthal and Lou La Monte leave office today … after 8 years each on the Malibu city council.
Karen Farrer and Mikke Pierson will be sworn in for 4 year terms.
And Rick Mullen’s term as mayor ends … he will go back to being a council member for another two years.
it will be up to the new city council to elect a new mayor.
Traditionally … that honorific title goes to the serving mayor pro tem … who is Jefferson Wagner.
Rosenthal was an activist on the city council … not content with status quo.
She has been negotiating Malibu’s exit from the Santa Monica-Malibu School District.
La Monte used his seat to parlay power within statewide political organizations …. to attack one target.
Rehab houses.
La Monte was able to convince statewide groups like the League of California Cities to endorse a bill that will crack down on rehab houses …. operating in California neighborhoods.
Tonight then … is the last meeting of the current Malibu city council … the city’s 14th.
The 15th city council will be sworn in after that.
Both meetings start at 6:30 at Malibu city hall.

The Bel Air Bay Club is going before the California Coastal Commission this week … to rebuild its two rock jetties. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/club-to-get-rocks-to-save-beach/

The number of Monarch butterflies is plummeting … and insect experts are worried.
30 years ago … as many as 10 million monarch butterflies migrated to California’s Pacific Coast each year.
This year only 30,000.
That’s an 87% drop from last year.
Researchers cannot pinpoint the direct cause for each annual decline.
Habitat loss … increased use of pesticides … climate change ….drought and severe weather.
Not to mention fires.
The New York Times call this an “insect apocalypse.”
The populations of flying insects have decreased by up to 82% over the last three decades.
