Lawsuit Flies Against Bird and 3 Other Scooter Companies In Santa Monica

In news from down the coast … a class action lawsuit has been filed in Santa Monica against the electric scooter companies.

Attorneys claim that people are getting hurt …

disabled people are having their way blocked … and that the entire scooter business scheme is illegal.

According to the Santa Monica Daily Press, the named plaintiffs include

  • the mother of a boy who was run over by a scooter riding illegally on the beach path,
  • three women who tripped over scooters on the sidewalk,
  • a man whose car was hit by a scooter rider,
  • a scooter rider who fell when he claims the throttle stuck causing him to crash,
  • a man who was hit by a scooter on the sidewalk, and
  • a woman who said she was unable to access her disabled parking space because scooters were blocking the space.

The lawsuit targets the companies Bird and Lime as well as scooter manufacturers Xiaomi and Segway.

The lawsuit charges that the defendants, are endangering the health, safety and welfare of riders, pedestrians and the general public.

And that they dumped thousands of scooters into Santa Monica without any significant, reasonable or appropriate warning to or approval by public authorities.

Bird put out a statement to the Santa Monica Daily Press.

It says that at Bird, safety is their very top priority … and Bird will continue to work with cities to help them redesign their transportation networks to make them safer and cleaner.
