Firefighters are still on Malibu Canyon Road … where a three acre fire broke out in heavy brush just after midnight.
The steep hillside beneath Hughes Research Lab … across the road from Malibu Presybterian Church … was on fire.
County firefighters were called out at 12:47.
They arrived to find the hillside burning uphill from the road.
Santa Ana winds had not yet arrived … but a second alarm was called and more than 100 firefighters dispatched.
A helicopter for the County fire department was overhead but is not is not clear if it dumped water.
It was quickly suppressed … dispatchers say.
Firefighters got a line around the fire and declared it controlled at 2:29 this morning.
There’re a fire hydrants in the area and Malibu Canyon Road had a heavy flow of water streaming down the side of the pavement.
Investigators were still at the scene at sunrise … trying to determine how the fire started.
It appears flames broke out alongside the road and then burned up the hill.
Southern California Edison crews were called in to evaluate if the 66,000 volt transmission line … on wooden poles … was damaged.
It does not appear that the power went out … although that cannot be confirmed …. the Edison outage computer is down for scheduled maintenance.
Malibu Canyon Road is open to traffic ,,, but fire trucks are still in the area … use caution.
