The launch … and successful booster retrieval … of a SpaceX rocket was a phenomenal sight over Malibu last night.
One of those stories that radio simply cannot do justice to.
The arcing rocket … the separation of the booster and second stage … a huge cloud of exhaust illuminated by sunlight over a darkened sky … the oscillating light waves coming out of the returning booster’s main stage as it stabilization engines pulsed on and off to being the return … upright voyage to earth.
Wow.

The body of a woman … apparently homeless … with no known Malibu connections … was found Friday near Point Dume.
She was found behind a small wall … hidden from passersby … at Kanan Dume Road near Pacific Coast Highway.

The Malibu city Council meets tonight.
On the agenda … the bitter battle between Malibu and the mountains recreation conservation authority … the MRCA.
MRCA wants permits to build a house … on a vacant lot that it owns in the Sycamore Park neighborhood.
The city planning commission says MRCA’s permits have expired … because they have not submitted plans for the house on a timely basis.
The MRCA claims Malibu is biased against the agency.
Both government agencies are locked in lawsuit and counter lawsuit over the MRCA plans to use private driveways in Sycamore Park … and other neighborhoods … to provide public access to parkland.
But at this particular site … MRCA may not plan to build a house at all … the parks agency usually buys land to prevent construction … and usually is not in the speculative building business.
The agency says it needs the house permits approved to boost the financial value of the lot.
This may be simply to justify the price it paid to buy the land.
——
The city council may also takes steps tonight to ban all balloons in the city.
Not just helium balloons.
But the kind of balloons that you blowup with your mouth.
Even water balloons.
City staff says the leftover latex and plastic is choking ocean life.
They say there are several environmentally friendly alternatives to using helium-filled balloons.
Bubbles, floating flowers, pinwheels and garden spinners, kites, flags, banners, streamers, and dancing inflatables.
taken together ,… balloons are believed to be responsible for tons of garbage in oceans.
And helium filled balloons trigger about a thousand fires every year in Southern California.

From the KBUU sports desk.
The Malibu (CA) varsity water polo team won Friday’s home non-conference game against Santa Ynez (CA) by a score of 17-11.
And in football … it was a Malibu homecoming thriller Friday night … under the lights at Malibu High.
The boys came from behind … and the defense held off a last minute drive … as the Sharks beat the Carpinteria Warriors 14 to 10.
Carpinteria scored first … a 9-yard run in the first half.
But after halftime … Malibu recovered a Warrior fumble at the 26 … and scored in six plays.
The Sharks point after kick was blocked …. leaving Carpinteria with a 7-6 lead.
But again … the Sharks defense kicked in.
They intercepted a pass on Carpinteria’s next possession … and ran it to the Warriors’ 23.
The Sharks scored on an 8-yard run … then converted the two-point conversion for a 14-7 lead.
Carpinteria made a field goal in the fourth … and got to within 30 yards of the goal line … but could not gain a first down.
Malibu ran out the clock and improved to 2-1 in the Citrus Coast League standings … and 6-1 overall. They travel to Santa Paula at 7 p-m next Friday.

Hurricane Sergio will send peak waves to Malibu late Wednesday through Friday. Hazardous surf conditions wil likely begin tomorrow or tomorrow night, then build through at least Thursday.
Early estimates of surf heights are 5 to 8 feet with sets to 10 feet during the peak of the event. The highest astronomical tides will be between 5.5 and 6.5 feet … during the late morning hours.
This could send water over topping the sand berms at Malibu Zuma and Trancas creeks … I possibly causing breach of those lagoons.
