Malibu May Need More Deputies On The Street, Sheriff Says
Written by 991KBU on September 25, 2018
Malibu is one of 89 cities large and small within L-A County … more than half of which hire Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies to act as local police.
That puts L-A County Sheriff Jim McDonnell in position as the Malibu police chief.
And that puts him charge of handling the increase in crime … particularly minor crimes. … petty crimes … in Malibu.

QQQ OUR FOLKS HAVE BEEN WORKING PRETTY HARD.
“Yeah, we’ve seen petty crime increase across the county, across the state.
“Our overall crime numbers across the county are looking actually very emcoruaging, in spite the challenges we’ve been having with AB 107 our folks have been working very hard.
The sheriff says his department is juggling patrol scHedules and routes … to try ot be in the areas were petty crooks will strike before they get there.
But that means the deputies patrolling Malibu may not be out on P C H as much as some residents like.
The sheriff agrees that it might be time for the city to re-evaluate the number of deputies that it hires from the sheriff’s office.

QQQQ: LEVEL OF SERVICES THAT THEY NEED.
“Each city always has to consider the challenges they face … you know …. their ability to deploy additional resources.
“But to do it judiciously,.. to be able to get an assessment on where they are, where they want to be two years, five years, ten years down the road.
“Looking at the increases in population, look at the challenges that you have based on response time based on geography.
“There’s a lot of factors that weigh into that, and we certainly want to work with each of our contract cities to be able to give them the level of services that they need.”
