‘No Unusual Cougar Activity In Malibu Park’ NPS Ranger Says

National Park Service cougar experts say they have not seen any indication of unusual mountain lion activity in the residential areas near Malibu High school.
This … despite a flurry of comments on local social media … Nextdoor dot com.
Mountain lions tracked by the National Park Service have not been detected in the Malibu Park area recently …. says spokesranger Kate Kuykendall.
She hastens to add that this does not mean that an untracked cougar may be in the area.
Kuykendall tells KBUU News that years of radio tracking data show that the cats are -not- moving into urbanized areas.
She says the proliferation of inexpensive video surveillance cameras … plus social media … are generating tons of publicity that may be causing people undue alarm.
While the National Park Service is in charge of researching the local mountain lion population … the state Fish and Wildlife department is in charge of cougars.
Their game wardens have been getting calls from Malibu … demanding that the cougar be relocated.
A spokesman in Sacramento says they are preparing a public response.
But the National Park Service ranger tells KBUU News there is no indication … of unusual cougar activity in the Malibu Park area.
