Malibu’s emergency alert system will be tested next Wednesday … as the city is trying to perfect it’s computer system that calls residents to alert them to fires or other major problems.

In its first test last winter …  the system failed to reach most Malibu phones.

Lessons were learned … including the advisability not to warn the entire city at the same time.

The phone lines and computer system got clock.
City Hall has figured out that … since Malibu is 21 miles long …  it would not be likely that the entire city had to be awakened at the same time.

Phones in the western part of Malibu …  from Zuma Beach West to County line … Will be tested next Wednesday.

The other three chunks of Malibu will be tested … one quarter each week … later in the month.

Malibu has 13,000 residents and only 36-hundred cell phones are registered with the city.

Emergency officials are imploring people to go to the cities website … to sign their cell phones up for emergency notices.

A disturbing series of burglaries hit the neighborhood above Malibu high school yesterday.

At least one house was entered as people were asleep inside.

Cars were pilfered along Busch Drive … Calpine and Zenith Point were hit.

And in a case that may have been related … a car was stolen on Sea Level Drive near Broad Beach as well.

Sheriffs deputies caution that some of the cars may have been left unlocked … and some people may actually be leaving their keys in cars.

In news news from up the coast … a last minute ill has been introduced in Sacramento that could be used to wedge open public access to a huge private beach west of Santa Barbara.

Hollister Ranch is a private club with coveted surf points.

Owners of the ranch have reached a secret deal with the state that would succeed in locking up nearly 9 miles of oceanfront … away from most of the public forever.

A public uproar has all but derailed the secret deal.

The legislature is all of a sudden moving on to bill that would make it easier for the state to condemn access to the beach through Hollister Ranch.

A lawyer for the Hollister Ranch homeowner complains about being blindsided by a rush deal in the Legislature.

And some coastal commissioners sat the Coastal Commission screwed up … … by approving the secret deal that its staff made with Hollister Ranch … to effectively lock it up.

But a different agency … the California State Lands Commission … still has a chance to reject the agreement.
