Caltrans Says`Design Mistakes Were Made’ At Beach Closure Parking Mess

Written by on August 27, 2018

“Design mistakes were made.”

Thats the official statement from Caltrans  … about the new median being installed along Pacific Coast Highway … near the popular beach between Latigo and Puerco canyons.

The state has installed vertical walls along the center divider … which is being replaced for nearly a mile.

The project has started with shuffling the traffic lanes over onto the shoulders …. eliminating the pavement used by pedestrians … bicyclists and people parking to go to the beach … lots of people.

Caltrans engineers stood on the median Friday and came up with a solution … 24-7 no parking signs.

But those signs may take days or even weeks to install … the contract for the project has to be changed … and Caltrans officials cannot say how long that will take.

An official tells KBUU News that “design mistakes were made” and the one mile stretch of beach should have been marked “no parking” from the beginning.

Malibu city manager Reva Feldman is demanding that the state realign the new traffic pattern … to restore room for pedestrians … bikes and parking.

Caltrans so far has ignored the city’s demand.

And beachgoers continue to squeeze onto the narrow space between the 50 mile per hour traffic … and the beach.

Caltrans tells KBUU they know the situation is dangerous … but cannot put up no parking signs quickly …. they need to change the contract.
