Victim ID’d – 4 Candidates For Council – Latest on Monsanto Round-Up Trials

The Ventura County coroner has identified the man who was struck and killed on Pacific Coast Highway in western Malibu Sunday night.
He was a 52-year-old man from Northridge … Kehinde Oguntoyinbok.
He was crossing the road … from the ocean towrds the landside … at 8:45 p.m. Sunday near County Line Beach.
This was just after dark.
The speed limit there … 55.
The driver of the van who hit him was not cited … according to the C H P.

The nomination period for candidates running for Malibu City Council opens next Monday.
Incumbents Lou La Monte and Laura Rosenthal are terming out … they cannot run after having served two terms.
School district activist Karen Farrer … Planning Commissioner Mikke Pierson are … and former Malibu Times reporter and editor Olivia Damavandi Ayreh have told KBUU News they will run.
Also … according to the Malibu Times … Public Works Commissioner Jim Palmer is lining up for the race.
Petitions to run for city council will need only about 30 names on them.
The city election is held concurrent to the November general election.
Nominating papers can be pulled until Friday, August 10.

The coastal commission meeting starts today in Santa Cruz.
Malibu does not have any issues this month on the agenda.
That’s unusual.

In San Francisco … a federal court judge says evidence seems weak that Roundup weed killer causes cancer.
Judge Vince Chhabria nevertheless is allowing hundreds of lawsuits against Roundup’s manufacturer, Monsanto, to move forward.
Lawsuits by cancer victims and their families say the agrochemical giant long knew about Roundup’s cancer risk but failed to warn them.
Many government regulators have rejected a link between the active ingredient in Roundup and cancer.
And Monsanto has vehemently denied such a connection.
The A-P is reporting that the judge spent a week in March hearing from epidemiologists and other doctors.
And he considers the evidence against Round Up to be weak at best.
But he is allowing hundreds of lawsuits to go ahead anyway,.
Meanwhile … in a separate case … the first Roundup cancer trial is continuing .. also
Roundup is used widely on private property in Malibu … and by the MRCA on some public lands.
But its use is strongly opposed by many in Malibu … and is banned on public lands within the city.
