Bring A Snack: Overnight Rental Fight On Monday Night
Written by 991KBU on July 6, 2018
And one of the biggest issues to face the Malibu City Council will have a public hearing on Monday night.
The city will be taking testimony … and enacting an ordinance … about the overnight rentals … so called B and B’s.
Virtually every attractive city in the state has grappled with the issue … and most have already adopted tight restrictions on the new industry.
Like all coastal cities … Malibu has proved to be very attractive to air B&B … VRBO … Home Away and other overnight rental brokerages.
But unlike other coastal cities … Malibu has been very hands off on regulating them … infuriating neighbors who have found their environment transformed into short-term hotels.
But overnight rentals have been a fact of life in Malibu forever … and many residents Count on the income to cover their mortgage.
The largest company … air B and B … has been meeting with Malibu residents who operate rentals helping them to make a game plan to fight tight restrictions.
Another loose group … led by a Malibu resident named Michael Lustig … has been gathering information and demanding strict laws.
City Hall took in $1.8 million in tax revenue from short-term residential rentals last year … but dozens of overnight rentals are flying under the radar and not paying the tax.
The meeting will be Monday night at City Hall … and KBUU news will be live tweeting what happens… with live coverage on both Facebook and Twitter.

The city council on Monday will also finalize mortgage papers for the purchase a vacant commercial land at the Civic Center and Point Dume.
