Sheriff’s Deal With 6 Malibu Cyn Shootings Then A 10-1/2 Month Pause

Malibu Canyon murder update:
Sheriff’s homicide detectives were back gathering evidence last Friday.
The campground remains closed to camping … but open to hiking.
State parks will not say if the campground will be closed through the 4th of July holiday.
No signs or warnings are posted.
The investigation continues.
In 2016 and 2017 … there were 6 reported shootings of people or vehicles in or around Malibu Canyon.
But .,. they were all clustered in 2016 and 2017.
There were no shootings after the end of July last year.
Then 10-1/2 months with no shootings.
Until… one shooting on June 18th … and the fatal killing of Tristan Beaudette … four days later … on June 22nd.
Is that a series?
Sheriff Jim McDonald … last week … said there was no clear pattern.

- Nov. 3, 2016 (James Rogers hit by buckshot)
- Nov. 9, 2016
- Jan. 7, 2017
- July 22, 2017
- June 6, 2017
- July 30, 2017
- June 18, 2018 (Murder).

NARRATOR: “You’re hearing this on Monday morning … but as I record this … it’s Sunday evening.
“And I’m walking … across the parking lot at Malibu Creek State Park.
“And it’s about a quarter full. Begin day today
“Usually on a weekend day it’s full … but today it’s three quarters empty.
“Nevertheless … there’s lots of people all around … coming out of the hills having hiked … going swimming in the swimming hole …
“Over there is a family having a picnic.
“I approach them.”
REPORTER: “Hi. I’m a reporter, I’m with the radio station in Malibu.
Can I ask you a couple of questions?
I don’t want to bother you if you don’t want me to.”
MALE ADULT: “OK.”
REPORTER: “My name is Hans, I am with KBUU Radio in Malibu.
“Are you having fun?
MALE ADULT [MEXICAN MUSIC IN BACKGROUND]: “Yeah.
REPORTER: “I don’t want to scare you, but have you heard about the shootings here?”
MALE ADULT: “Mmmm .. wow .. you know I come here for many years and I have never heard anything like that having before, so no.”
REPORTER: “Hi. Can I ask you a question. I am a reporter with KBUU Radio in Malibu.”
ADULT MALE #2: “Sure.”
REPORTER: “I’m doing a story about the shootings out here have you heard about that about a week ago?
ADULT MALE #2: “No we are from Chicago.
REPORTER” “From Chicago?
“There’s a campground right over there and somebody got killed right there by some sort of maniac.
ADULT MALE #2: “Oh wow.”
REPORTER: “Does that alarm you that something like that happened?”
ADULT MALE #2: “[CHUCKLE] Uh. Yeah I mean I think any incident where somebody gets shot … I think that’s alarming.
REPORTER: “So you weren’t warned about that?” “
ADULT MALE #2: “No not at all.”
REPORTER TO OTHER PERSON: “Hi. I’m a reporter for KBUU Radio in Malibu.
I’m doing a story about the shootings out here.
“Did you hear about that?”
“ADULT MALE #3: “no I didn’t.”
REPORTER: “Does it alarm you that your hiking out here and they didn’t tell you about this?”
ADULT MALE #3: “Yeah, actually that would be good to know if you’re coming out here with your family.
“There’s a lot of families out here with the kids…there are a lot of little children here actually.
REPORTER: “Where are you from?”
“ADULT MALE #3: “L-A.”
REPORTER TO YOUNG WOMAN: ““this is your first time here right?
YOUNG WOMAN: “Yeah.
REPORTER: did you hear that somebody was shot here
YOUNG WOMAN: “yeah I heard over the news
And like six other people were shot here?
I did not know that whatsoever.
They’re not warning people about that does that worry you?
Yeah I’ll little worry it’s my first time here so now I’m a little worried about it.
NARRATOR: “ I continued my walk up the trail and ran into a local lady with a brand-new baby who was just hiking in from the mountains.”
REPORTER TO WOMAN: “And the story I’m working on is that you were not told about that when you got here this morning, I’ll bet, you were not told about this?”
WOMAN #2: “well I’m on Nextdoor Monte Nido, because I live there, and basically somebody had written that there was a shooting.
“And that’s the only thing I’ve heard up.
“So why are they keeping you quiet?”
REPORTER: “You live here and you still hadn’t heard about it?
WOMAN #2: “No no.”
REPORTER: “What are your thoughts?
WOMAN #2: “Well I think it’s crazy.
“I mean, I have a baby and I think that’s absolutely nuts.
Part of me even thinks now — after speaking to you — that I don’t ever want to come walking here.”
NARRATOR: “All afternoon people were walking, right past me, past the tape, past the road closed sign.
Through the campground where the murder occurred 10 days ago.
At the entrance to the State Park they said I couldn’t drive up there, they said I could walk up there.
Not much to see..”
