Mark July 9 For Bu B and B Battle

Written by on June 21, 2018

July Ninth will be a battle royale between the two sides … in the fight over vacation rentals in Malibu.

The city is late to the table … joining other California coastal cities in regulating overnight rentals.

For some … an intrusion of motel rooms and rowdy guests in their residential neighborhoods.

For others … a cherished source of income and vestige of the American spirit of commerce.

For the Coastal Commission … it’s a chance to undo a wrong … and open up the Malibu coast to low cost visitor accommodations.

The city council will hold a hearing July Ninth to hear comments and fine craft an ordinance aimed at Air B and B … VRBO … HomeAway and other businesses.

The current proposal would allow overnight rentals during a long summer season and over the Thanksgiving to New Year holiday.

Owners would be required to register and pay the city tax.

The host must prove the property is his or her primary residence.

The property must under most circumstances have onsite parking for all guests.

The property has to meet fire and building codes … and not have any outstanding code violations.

And there would have to be a 24/7 manager available to deal with noise or other problems at a short-term rental property.

The ban on short-term renting of mot condos and apartments would continue … except it would allow a resident to rent out a bedroom in such units … but not the whole unit.

The proposed ordinance includes fines of $1000 per day of violation … a steep penalty … but rents are big in Malibu.

July 9th is the date … for the hearing.
