Enormous Construction Crane May Be Installed At Tip Of Dume

California State Parks plans an enormous crane at the end of Point Dume … to replace the staircase leading down to Little Dume Beach.

The existing stairway is ancient and falling apart.

State Parks goes before the Malibu Planning Commission on Monday night with its proposal.

The new stairway would be 240 feet in length … and would sit on 36 poles that would be drilled into the cliff face.

The state says it will protect the fragile coastal bluffs by doing the work from platforms delivered by a gigantic crane.

The 100-ton construction crane will sit atop the bluff … with a swing radius of 140 feet.

The staging area and crane pad would temporarily impact the bluff top … the state says.

70 feet wide and 415 feet long on the blufftop.

The state says this will be placed within the most biologically degraded segment of the park preserve at Point Dume.

And a small construction yard would be needed near the parking lot on Cliffside Drive … but the heavily-used parking spaces on Cliffside would be maintained for public use.

Public access to the beach via the existing staircase will be maintained while the new staircase is constructed .. the state says.

The project goes before the Planning Commission next Monday night.
