SM Discouraging Driving Into Town – It’s Working

Get ready to start paying 40 percent more to park for a day in downtown Santa Monica.
The city of Santa Monica is trying to discourage more driving and encourage alternative transit in Malibu’s neighbor.
This comes after Metro built a $2 billion train into Santa Monica … the Expo line … and allowed Santa Monica two refuse To build Park and ride lot like every other city along metro trains has.
And Santa Monica has laid out and strained station so that it is a three block hike to the Malibu bus stops.
The parking rate increase will start this summer.
One significant population exempted from the cost … City of Santa Monica employees.
The Santa Monica lookout newspaper points out that city of Santa Monica employees get free parking downtown.
That’s 2200 full-time workers … with free parking.
It’s not known how the parking rate increase will affect the merchants in downtown Santa Monica … or rather the remaining merchants.
Both the Santa Monica Place Mall and the Third Street Promenade both have large numbers of empty storefronts … for the first time in 30 years.
