Caltrans To Shift Narrow Lanes Towards Ocean

Written by on May 18, 2018

Caltrans crews are finishing the first phase of the 5 point 2 million project to save Pacific Coast Highway from sliding down the hillside at Escondido Beach.

Meanwhile … drivers continue to whiz through the 30 mile per hour construction zone at speeds nearly twice that velocity.

A new wall has been built on the hillside above the highway … where dirt has slid onto the shoulder as an active landslide continues to cause the whole hill to move towards the ocean.

Caltrans spokesman Peter Jones says the next phase will happen soon.

“Now on the north side of the street south side ready for the different expressions that it will go through.

“And once that is complete, our construction phase will move to the south side of Pacific Coast Highway.”

Sometime soon … traffic lanes will be shifted towards the hillside and away from the ocean … to allow crews to begin driving piles and anchoring an existing concrete wall to bed rock.

The construction project has another 15 months to go.
