Navy Rejects Proposed Wind Turbines
Written by 991KBU on May 7, 2018
The U-S Navy has just said no to offshore windfarms … off the Southern Califrnia coast.
That’s not the final word … but it is a major influence on the negotiations now going on between Washignton … Sacramento and several companies that want to start generating green electricity off the coast.
The San Diego Union reports today that wind energy companies are looking at the constant winds in the Santa Barbara Channel and thinking it would be a good place to put offshore Wind turbines.
There is no talk about putting turbines in State waters … which extend out 3 miles from the coast.
And because of the Deepwater further out … wind turbines would have to float and use undersea cables to bring power back to shore.
The first commercial offshore wind facility in the U.S. was launched in December 2016 off Rhode Island — and more are in the works.
And the federal government and state of California are interested in wind turbines off the California coast.
Enter the Navy.
They say they need the entire ocean off the Southern and Cent
California … from Big Sur as far south as Mexico ,…. for Navy and Marine Corps missions conducted in the air, on the surface, and below the surface of these waters.
Waters near the Channel Islands would be off limits … due to their marine national monument protected status.
The Navy points out that more than 120,000 square miles of sea space off Southern Californoa is used by sailors … the Marine Corps .., and Vandenburg Air Force Base.
