Bluffs Park To Get Rules On When Private Groups Can Close It
Written by 991KBU on April 5, 2018
Who gets to use Bluffs park … and close it to the general public?
That’s the delicate policy issue going before the Malibu City Council Monday night.
Private companies occasionally rent out the entire park .. like the Cheesecake Factory … which is renting and taking over the park for a corporate picnic late this summer.
And now … the people who run a local music festival are laying the groundwork to fence off Malibu’s central park for a day or maybe two every spring.
The city council has asked for a policy … and the city staff has come back with such a plan.
A maximum of six big events would be allowed each year at Malibu Bluffs Park.
Events would be permitted for a maximum of one day.
And set up and tear down could not be allowed to close the whole park.
Events that take the entire park would only be permitted on weekdays during the summer.
The city says its events would take priority … those include the Malibu Native American pow wow …
Priority two would be non-profit organizations or private events benefitting the Malibu Community or arts in Malibu.
Private or business events would be at the end of the line.
The matter goes up for public discussion and a city council decision …. next Monday.
