Frank Gehry Landmark May Replace Gladstone’s

L-A County supervisors yesterday approved the idea of tearing down the iconic … if poorly received … Gladstones seafood restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway.
It might replaced with a new beachfront dining complex designed by Frank Gehry and operated by Wolfgang Puck … and run by some veteran restaurant industry execs.
The supervisors asked the Department of Beaches and Harbors to begin negotiations with Puck and his team over development of two new restaurants at the site.
Wolfgang Puck has visions of transforming the property into a destination for travelers as well as a neighborhood restaurant by combining casual dining with fine dining.
Architect Frank Gehry has submitted some conceptual drawings and a cardboard model … we have a photo at the KBUU Newswire site.
You may remember Gehry’s first models for the proposed concert hall in downtown … the so-called wet cardboard models.
Now … those laughed at models are the symbol of Los Angeles …Disney Hall.
These look sort of like that … and we may end up with another iconic L-A image at the foot of Sunset Boulevard. … at Pacific Coast Highway.
Tuesday’s agreement starts a series of bureaucratic steps needed to complete the new development, which county officials estimate could take several years.
Then … Gladstones will be demolished and construction of the new building will start.
L-A County holds a 50-year lease on the state-owned land … where Gladstones has been in business since 1972.
Not addressed was the impact the proposal on Pacific Coast Highway traffic.
The new tourist attraction proposal looks like it will draw significantly more patrons then the current restaurant and parking lot.
