Villanueva Rushing To OK Thousands Of Concealed Weapons Permits As Floodgates  Of Handguns Open In LA County

L A County sheriff Alex Villanueva is rushing to issue a huge number of concealed weapons permits to people in Los Angeles County.

The sheriff … who is running for re-election on a law and order platform … announced he will speed up his office’s approval of concealed weapons permits.

As of this week … just over 31 hundred residents of L A County had concealed gun permits.

The sheriff wants to grant about 50 thousand more hidden gun licenses.

Villanueva cited the U S Supreme Court’s ruling this week … which struck down moist restrictions on laws restricting people from carrying hidden handguns.

“Most of the very large metropolitan areas were a ‘good cause standard’ – and we were one of those ‘good cause standards’ for decades,

Well now we are retooling our operation to a ‘shall issue standard’ and so … bear with us as we work through it. We were already seeing an increase in applications being submitted and we’ve already moved in that direction since I took office. “

California … until this week … required that a person show good cause in order to qualify for a concealed weapon permit.

Now … the nationwide standard has been dropped to “I want to have a gun hidden in my waistband and I am not a convicted felon.

Villanueva had already been issuing concealed weapons permits at a much faster clip in LA County.

He had made it a top priority.

Under his administration … in three years the number of concealed weapons permits in LA County had gone up by a factor of 44 … from 151 guns to 3,145 under Villanueva’s accelerated permitting policy.

Villanueva expects to hit 50 thousand hidden gun permits under his new policy of issuing the permits as fast as the can.

In fact .. he is asking police chiefs in LA county’;s cities … with their own police departments … to lend him some police officers to help him process the applications.

People will still have to provide proof that they took a gun training course… that they do not have any restraining orders against them… and that they are not convicted felons.

Prove that. … and now you automatically get a permit to carry a concealed handgun.

At his public appearance Wednesday … Villanueva said that gun control advocates … well … tough for them.

“For those who are opposed to the entire concept of CCWs and who are extreme anti-Second Amendment … I don’t know how you describe it … or against CCWs… it’s moot really.

“Because now our job in the executive branch of government … which obviously law-enforcement includes … we enforce the law we don’t either write the law or interpret the law,

“We have to enforce the law as it is written and as it is interpreted by the courts. So that’s the deal … the cards we were dealt with … and so we are moving forward with lightning speed.”

But that’s not what Sheriff Alex Villanueva.said when faced with laws that he did not like last year.

For example … the stater legislature has written laws that require him to comply with oversight from a Civil Oversight Commission.

Villanueva chose not to comply with that law … according to those who enforce it.

Also … the county Board of Supervisors passed a Public Health Order that all county employees be vaccinated against Covid 19.

Villanueva decided he didn’t like that rule either … and didn’t enforce it.

Villanueva is running for re-election this fall.

He faces former Long Beach police chief Robert Luna.

In the primary … the incumbent sheriff got only 34 percent of the vote … a record low approval vote for an incumbent sheriff in LA County.

=====

Villanueva is blaming defund the policy moves … and the end of pandemic restrictions … for a dramatic increase in major crimes.

The sheriff says major crimes are up 14 percent.

And he does not take any responsibility for that …. He blames the end of the pandemic … and the move by some jurisdictions to decrease funding to his office.

NEWSCART A73464 AV CRIMERATE

“We have a 13.91% increase in part one crimes. That’s the bad news.

“The good news that is I have a one-year drop now of 36% in homicides.

“And a 2.2 percent drop in forcible rapes.

“So that’s the positive news.

“The bad news is that wet is driving up that part one crime tastic up is a 30% increase in robberies and a 38% increase in burglaries.

“But if you remember I have been kind of warning you about this for a while now … that once the pandemic starts diminishing its impact on society patterns … you are going to see traditional crime patterns reestablish themselves.”

Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

Minimum Wage Rises To $15.96 In County, Now Matches Malibu

Today being July First … some new laws are taking effect.

One of them is that the minimum wage in unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County is now $15.96 per hour.

That matches the minimum wage within the incorporated City of Malibu.

The county minimum wage applies to employees who perform at least two hours of work in a week within unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.

It affects every person who works … including people who are not U -S citizens.

And it effects interns … unless the intern is actually enrolled in school classes and getting academic credit for the internship.

The rate increase amounts to a 6.4 percent increase over the previous $15 minimum wage.

State Releases Data On Teacher Qualifications, Malibu Schools Look Average

Malibu schools come out looking about average … as the State of California has unveiled computer data that rank very school in the state for the most prepared and experienced teachers.

State education officials unveiled a new data platform yesterday that offers the first comprehensive look at teacher qualifications and experience levels on a school by school basis.

Ant person can look up any school on the website: link .

The data tables show which schools have fully credentialed and experienced teachers.

And … which schools have classes taught by teachers who are not certificated in that area … or are student teachers …

It shows that such non certified teachers are … surprise … clustered in schools in areas with  low-income … or large numbers of non white kids.

The data shows that Malibu High School has 81 percent of its classes taught by teachers who have certificates for the classes being taught.

That is just below the SMMUSD average … and just below the statewide average.

The statewide average is 85 percent of classes taught by experienced teachers … and the Santa Monica Malibu districtwide figure is 86 percent.

At Malibu Middle School … 85 percent of the classes taught re taught by teachers with the correct certificate.

Webster Elementary … 90 percent.

And Malibu Elementary… 99 percent.

School district statewide sometimes have to put teachers into classrooms who do not have the proper certificate … due to staff shortages.

For example … sometimes a substitute teacher who does not speak French is put into a French class.

California faces a growing teacher shortage … exacerbated by the pandemic and an aging workforce with numerous retirements.

Malibu Way Out Ahead Again, As EPA Told By Court Evidence Shows Round Up Causes Cancer

Round Up.may be so dangerous that the U-S government needs to restrict its use.

The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a ruling yesterday.

It said that Monsanto … and its successor company Bayer … may have a giant problem.

The court says the Trump administration’s E P A ignored its own scientific evidence when it concluded that Roundup is not a likely cause of human cancer.

The court did not require the Environmental Protection Agency to ban Roundup.

The EPA classified glysophate … th active weed killer in Roundup … as a safe product more than 30 years ago.

But the court ruled that the EPA ignored recent science … when the Trump administration reaffirmed that glyphosate poses no serious risk to humans.

Not accurate … according tot he recent scientific studies.

“EPA did not adequately consider whether glyphosate causes cancer” says the court decision.
EPA “shirked its duties under the Endangered Species Act” on the possible dangers the chemical poses to more than 1,600 species of imperiled animals and plants” … Judge Michelle Friedland wrote in the 3-0 ruling.

“EPA’s errors in assessing human-health risk are serious.”

They city of malibu banned roundup use in Malibu years several years ago … one of the first local agencies in the country to do so,

But the product remains on sale at home depot … Lowe’s and stores all across the state.

And there is no enforcement of the anti-glysophate ordinance in Malibu.

The federal appeal court ordered the EPA to conduct a new assessment, giving proper weight to scientific evidence, by Oct. 1st.

Bayer has the option to appeal to the Repoiubcan dominated US Supreme Court … which has overturned similar environmental protections whenever possible,

Want To See Fireworks? Leave Town This Year

If you want to see fireworks on the fourth of July from Malibu… Get some binoculars and pray that there’s no fog. The closest aerial bombardment to celebrate Independence Day will be at Marina Del Ray … across the bay and visible from anywhere east of Point Dume … if the weather is clear.

There is also a fireworks show scheduled in Pacific Palisades… Which may be visible in the eastern Malibu.

The deadline has come and gone for private individuals to apply for a county fire department permit for an offshore barge to launch fireworks over the ocean. In past years… Some beachfront owners at Malibu colony Paradise Cove or Broadbeach have done that.

Apparently… No one this year.

Overhead firework shows are also planned at the JANSS shopping center near the 101 freeway at route 23 in Thousand Oaks. Also at Ventura College… Which is east of Victoria Avenue and north of the 101 freeway about 2 miles.

No firework shows are planned in Santa Monica… Or on the west side of LA… Other than the shows at Marina del Rey and Pacific Palisades.
