Traffic nightmare in eastern Malibu … a drunk hurts a power pole … the pole is down … the highway is closed … and the detour is jammed.

ABC7’s chopper pilot … Scott Reifff … summed it up this morning.

NEWSCART A731XX

ANCHOR: “ABC7’S Scott Reiff is in Air 7 … over Malibu… this morning.

SCOTT REIFF: “Oh my goodness .. what a mess…”

The problem was just east of Carbon Canyon … at the Rambla Vista curves.

Pacific Coast Highway was closed at four minutes after midnight this morning…the road was expected to be closed until seven this morning… as Southern California Edison replaces a pole and gets wires off the road.

This is at the intersection with the most crashes in Malibu… According to sheriffs deputies and their crash statistics.

We don’t have any details yet on what caused the crash at 12:04 this morning… but a driver was reportedly arrested for drunk driving.

Last night … loud cars and obvious exhibitions of speed were apparent up and down the coast.

Malibu and Santa Monica Meet With Mediators Over Possible School Divorce Terms

Santa Monica and Malibu officials were in a sensitive negotiating session over the weekend … as a mediator tried to work out some sort of compromise in the bitter divorce battle.

Of course … details what happened inside is not going to be revealed yet.

Malibu is hoping to come up with a financial package … an agreement to transfer cash from Malibu to Santa Monica … to keep that school district in the position of being one of the top five richest school districts in the state of California …

Santa Monica school board members say they favor an independent Malibu school district … but not if it means a reduction in the flow of property tax money flowing from Malibu to santa monica under the states complicated tax revenue laws.

LA County office of education officials granted a one month delay in the divorce proceedings a month ago… It’s not clear where the schedule is now.

Their next meeting is April 4th.

SMMUSD Indoor Mask Rule Drops As 31% Of Parents Favored Continuing It

Almost a third of the parents replaying to a survey say they want the Santa Monica Malibu school district to continue to require everyone indoors to wear masks.

But as of this morning … that rule is no more.

63 percent of the district parents support no masks…. now.

The SMMUSD Board voted Thursday to strongly recommend indoor mask wearing

The new protocols apply to both students and staff, whether they have been vaccinated or not.

That brings Santa Monica-Malibu in line with state and county guidance.

But not so in the gargantuan LA Unified School District.

The District will continue to conduct weekly testing of staff and students at schools and district offices.

And they will track positive cases reported.

There were 52 deaths reported Saturday … deaths in Los Angeles County caused by the Covid 19 coronavirus.

But … the number of COVID-positive patients in Los Angeles County hospitals continues to fall.

As of Saturday … 537 Covid 19 cases were hospitalized in LA County.

Of those patients, 107 were in intensive care.

That’s the lowest number since last July.

The total death county in L A County … over two years … is a staggering 31,275 fatalities.

Sunday Barricades To Return To Malibu Village Shopping Center

An earlier edition of this story, in one paragraph, said Malibu Colony was affected.  It has been corrected to show that the shopping center is Malibu Village.  We regret the error.

Sunday morning barricades are going to go back up at the largest shopping center on Cross Creek Road.

Malibu Village’s owner says they never encouraged or supported the impromptu car shows … These are the Sunday morning unorganized gatherings that act as a beacon for dangerous driving and loud showoffs.

Chris Farber is the asset manager … for Jamestown Properties … which owns the Malibu Village shopping center.

NEWSCART A73166 JAMESTOWN CHRIS FARBER

“At the end of the day this comes down to trespassing or violations of private property. And so we’re trying to work for the resort is on what to do.

“We have not been willing to put our staff whether it be private security for our property management teams in harms way. People have really been acting poorly, and very disrespectfully out there.

“And so we’re trying to think of how to handle this appropriately with the powers that be to find a response in a reasonable way out of this.”

Some city officials have had it with the shopping center’s car shows.

One city Planning Commissioner … at the last meeting … asked if the city could find the shopping center owner in violation of its Coastal Use Permit … which does not allow special events without a permit.

Does Jameson consider its property to be a crime victm?  Chris Farber: … the asset manager

NEWSCART A73167 JAMESTOWN FARBER 2

“We are against this we have not been trying to trying to have this happen we have not been trying to grow it we have not been trying to take advantage of it. We are happy to work t the community and the city and the sheriff to prevent it or move it.

“Questions about responsibility? I understand the city is frustrated. I think it is only recently that they realize how hard we have been working to prevent the show.”

This past weekend … there impromptu car shows were in full progress in the parking lot outside Marmalade Cafe … the banks … and the other shops.

But right next door … in front of Malibu Kitchen … barricades were up.

That little corner of shopping center …. by the Starbucks … is owned by a different company.

Inside the barricades … a car show for a handful of VIPs.

Violent Offenders May Be Moved To Malibu-Area Juvenile Prison Camp, After Santa Clarita Opposes Them – Kuehl Votes In Favor

Los Angeles county is planning to transfer its most violent youth offenders to Malibu… To camp Kilpatrick house on Mulholland Highway,

40 male youth accused of the most violent crimes are to be placed at camp Kilpatrick station… A long time facility that was designed to function as a rehabilitative school for low risk juveniles.

The county board of supervisors… Including our local supervisor Sheila Kuehl … has picked the Malibu facility after Santa Clarita residence objected to the high risk youth being placed there.

The county’s youth court center is there… as well as the most-secure juvenile offender detention center,

Camp Kirkpatrick … however … Campus Kilpatrick is the flagship location of the Los Angeles County Probation Department’s “L.A. Model” for juvenile rehabilitative service facilities.

The L.A. Model at Campus Kilpatrick is a smallgroup treatment model that is youth-centered and embodies a culture of care rather than a culture of control.

Malibu city councilwoman Karen Farrer says camp Kilpatrick is not set up with the necessary security enhancements for potentially dangerous or violent detainees.

The county’ current proposed plan would put youth offenders who have been categorized as the most violent into a facility that was not designed or built for this purpose … the city manager says. …

It potentially puts at risk all those involved, including staff, other detainees, and possibly residents in the surrounding communities.

Councilmember Farrer is requesting Council authorization to have the Mayor submit a letter to the BOS opposing the use of Camp Kilpatrick as a secure track site.

CPA To Explain Higher Power Bills To Malibu City Council Tonight

Questions about escalating power bills might get answered tonight at the Malibu City Council meeting.

The president of the clean power alliance will be at the city Council meeting… At least on the zoom call… to explain what is going on with your power bill.

Ted Bardacke will speak at around 6:30 tonight.

The clean power alliance has been taking a lot of heat for increased power bills… But is pointing the finger at Southern California Edison.

Under state law… Edison has the monopoly on delivering electricity in Southern California. But other companies can compete for the power generation… and the clean power alliance has been given all of Malibu’s business by the Malibu city Council.

Of course people can opt out… And have Edison generate their power as well.

The two companies are pretty close in rates …  but Ediuosn has the monopoly for deliver and that is two thirds of your bill.

And that rate has been going up and up.

Agoura Hills Landmark Lasted 100 years, But It’s Down

A 100 year old building … one of the first built in the local area … has been demolished.

But operas more importantly ,,.,., so has the landmark sign.

The sign was held up by a power pole … it said Agoura in big red block letters.

It has stood on old US 101 .. now called Agoura Road … for an estimated 100 years.

The sign was a movie star … it made a cameo appearance in movies filmed back in the 1950s;

It stood next to an old building that was the community’s first grocery store…. And was more recently used as a community playhouse.

It was demolished last week.

The City of Agoura Hills … which got its name from the sign … took possession of the old red sign.
