Malibu High Plans To Be Unveiled Thursday at 4 – Bus Yard May Be Shifted To Next To Horse Arenas

Even if an agreement is reached to split Malibu out of the Santa Monica school district … plans continue to reconstruct Malibu High School.
Malibu voters approved a 195 million dollar bond issue in 2018 … with all of that money earmarked to for Malibu …. and the lion’s share for Malibu Middle School and Malibu High.
That’s in addition to earlier bond issues …. that paid for the new classroom and administration building that just opened.
On Thursday night … architects will reveal the new designs for the campus.
Facilities manager Carey Upton tells KBUU News one major issue that needs to be resolved … where to move the school bus barn …
Right now … the bus barn has its access on a road that runs right in the middle of the campus.
Upton says … that’s not good.

“The challenge with the bus barn where it currently is located involves the buses traveling right next to students … to children … and we’ve always felt that the safety … noise .. the movement of the buses were a bit of a challenge.
“So with the new campus plan … there will be a little U-shape off of Morning View .. a driveway where the buses can drop off.
“But that means we have to find a new place for the bus barn away from the center of the campus.”
Upton says the bus barn might be moved to somewhere in the Civic Center area … but for the time being … the school district needs to designate a place on its property.
That might be a piece of land owned by the school district … just south of the horse corrals in the Malibu Equestrian Center.

“We need to designate a place.
“Because we were thinking well we don’t need to solve this for 7 or 8 years until that phase comes up … but as a part of our CEQA process we have to designate one.
“The only one that we have … that we have control over … and in some ways the one that would have a bigger impact … is at the lower part of the Equestrian Park.
“That’s not for the two arenas for the horses or for the parking that’s off Merritt Drive,.
“But in the lower section there’s a grass/dirt lot at the bottom and that’s the location we’re going to place it for now for our study …. knowing that there would have to be impacts that we would have to resolve … to mitigate.“
Those impacts include school bus traffic on Merritt Drive.
Upton said the district would rather move the buses onto government land elsewhere in Malibu … possibly near the Malibu City Hall.
The new plans for Malibu High will be unveiled at a school board meeting … at 4 p-m Thursday … on the Zoom platform.
