Oversized Vehicles On PCH Again In City’s Target

Written by on January 15, 2021

The Malibu city government is trying again to get rid of vehicles parked on city streets for long periods of time.

Three years ago … the city council enacted an ordinance banning oversized vehicles from parking on streets.

Since then … gigantic RVs and trailers with slide out extensions have cropped up along the Pacific Coast Highway.

Some of the drivers have taken up part of the bike path at Zuma Beach … or otherwise left fiberglass and metal blocking the side of the road .. leaving no place for people to walk.

The city ordinance was also targeting businesses that leave their storage trailers … essentially giant advertisements … in the same parking place for years at a time.

The owner of a surfboard and kayak rental place at the Malibu Pier is notorious for hogging the public street for his business.

Several years ago … when the city tried to crack down on that … the owner went before the coastal commission.

He turned on the tears … and said his physically handicapped clients would have no place to use the pacific Ocean unless he gets top park his advertising and storage truck on the highway … permanently.

The coastal commission bought it.

Now .. the city is trying again … this time with a citywide ordinance.

The city cannot enforce its ordinance without signs … seven signs … on at every road crossing the city limits.

It needs a needs a Coastal Use Permit … which means an appeal to the Coastal Commission is likely …

The matter goes before the Planning Commission next week.
