There has indeed been a small uptick in coronavirus transmission rates.
But Los Angeles County appears to have avoid the post-Labor Day surge. the Los Angeles County Public Health Department yesterday said we can begin looking toward school and business reopening.
Today … the Board of Supervisors will discuss the possibility of allowing school districts to apply for waivers to offer some in-person instruction.
The Santa Monica Malibu school district has been workign furiously to get kids back to school … and some parents are exasperated that this has not happened yet.
School district, city and county officials are facing increasing pressure to find ways to reopen.
But the school board will have to sign off on any plan … and there are lots of constituent groups that need to sign off as well.
Not the least of which … parents and teachers.
Public health director Barbara Ferrer said the county will rely on lessons learned from past decisions about reopenings, as well as its level of confidence in the ability of affected businesses to adhere to health restrictions once they’re permitted to begin operating.
And the fact that many people are still not wearing masks … and are still having parties or going to the beach with friends …. still hurting us. “There’s no way to open with as much safety as possible if people are not complying with the public health directives.
Los Angeles County is still listed in the state’s highest-risk category for COVID-19 under its four-tier economic recovery roadmap.
The county is in the “purple” tier, signifying continued widespread transmission of the virus locally.
Last week, the county met both of the state’s criteria for advancing to the next stage, the “red” tier.
Right now … out seven-day average testing positivity rate is above eight cases per 100,000 residents.
We need to get that down to seven… in order to move from purple to red.
