One City Council Candidate Falls One Name Short, Won’t Be On Ballot

One candidate has failed to make the Malibu city council ballot, after her nominating petition came up with 19 valid voters on it, instead of the required 20.

Alia Ollinkainen, a Malibu teacher, had six names rejected because they were not currently registered voters, she said last night in a Facebook posting.

She was the only woman remaining in the race, after another possible candidate took out nominating petitions but did not return them, city clerk Heather Glaser said Wednesday.

Ollinkainen said on Facebook said she had made sure that the signatories actually lived within the Malibu city limits, eaving the only possibility that their names were not on the current voters rolls.

“When I first requested my nomination papers I was shocked to learn my own voter registration was not valid,” she said on Facebook.

“I voted by mail in the last election. My ballot came to my current address. I have no idea how it wasn’t on there – so I had to re-register in order to request a nomination paper.”

Ollinkainen made the problem into a learning issue for voters, and publicly urged them to check to make sure they are currently registered properly by going to the Secretary of State’s voter status page, https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/  .

Glaser said the remaining eight candidates are

  • Paul Grisanti,
  • Andy Lyon,
  • Rick Mullen (incumbent),
  • Bruce Silverstein,
  • Lance Simmens,
  • Doug Stewart,
  • Steve Uhring and
  • Mark Wetton.

Three seats are available, and the election is concurrent with the 11 days of voting for the fall General Election, ending Nov. 3.
