Southern California Edison is moving ahead with plans to rebuild the 40-year-old power substation that serves the Civic Center area.
The Tapia substation … on Cross Creek Road near Urban Outfitters … needs to be totally replaced.
To keep the lights on … Edison is building a temporary substation on a vacant lot just north of Webster Elementary School.
That’s actually the site of an old substation … that used to be there but was removed.
It’s called the Rindge substation … in Winter Canyon.
The power company says there will be a lot of heavy equipment int he area this fall … as the old Tapia substation on Cross Creek Road is removed.
But the do not expect any outages.
Southern California Edison officials say it was a transformer on a ground pad west of Broad Beach that failed on Sunday … possibly causing a cascade of blackouts in western Malibu.
A power outage first hot west of Trancas at 5:30 Sunday morning.
A power line fell three hours later on Point Dume … extending the blackout to Malibu park.
Service was restored to the area by hooking many of the customers into the circuit just to the east.
And then that circuit tripped off Sunday night.
Edison officials have warned that the geographic layout of Malibu is one reason why blackouts like this happen.
With all the circuits next to each other … as opposed to being in a grid … when one circuit goes out … the engineers do not have a lot of options to restore power.
