City Hall News Roundup: Election Season Here, Mid-Malibu Hotel Brewing, BandB Ordinance, More Coming,

So many things happened at Monday’s city council meeting that we could not possibly squeeze them all into Monday’s newscast.

Bonnie Blue, the Malibu city planning director for about 5 years, will resign and move to Florida.

She wants to be with family.

The issue of a new luxury Hotel in the middle of Malibu was raised by several residents during the call to the public.

Developer Norm Haney owns an abandoened gas station and a luxuty office building … with an underground garage … right across the street from Nobu and billionaires beach.

Haney was to convert the gas station property into a luxury Grand entrance … and remodel the office building into a small luxury Hotel and spa.

Amy’s project would pay the city $800,000 upfront for improvements to the entire city’s water supply.

And hotel taxes would funnel about $90,000 dollars a month to a city … that is anxious to reduce overnight rentals in residential districts … which bringing a lot of money to the city.

Amy says it’s been more than five years of frustration trying to get the Hotel plans through the city bureaucracy … and lately the coated crisis has gummed up the project further.

City manager Reva Feldman says the matter we’ll go back before the city council on August 10th . then over to the Planning Commission … then back to the city council.

Says Haney … …”I’m frustrated and disappointed. I have a lot of money invested in this.

”

At my next city Council meeting … Feldman also announced that construction will begin to rebuild Civic Center way this fall.

A long planned installation of sidewalks and bike lanes … plus safety improvements on the hill and in the curve … have been stymied.

Malibu resident Bruce Silverstein had appealed approval of the project to the coastal commission … but the commission has just ruled there was no environmental encroachment from the project against a nearby wetlands.

Feldman said the contractor will continue to honor his bid … and the contract will go before the city Council for approval on August 10th.

Feldman said to important matters from Malibu are nearing clearance from the coastal commission as well.

A new city ordinance on fireproof landscaping has been deemed acceptable by coastal commission staff … and is up for approval in early August.

And an ordinance that would control the use of rodent poison and pesticide in Malibu we’ll probably go up to the coastal commission for approval this fall.

And silly season is officially here … nominating petitions are open House of last Monday for the city Council election.

The deadline to turn in nominating petitions is August 7th … unless incumbent Rick Mullen decides not to run for a second term.

If Mullen decides one term is enough … the nominating petitions will close on August 12th.

Current council members Skyler Peak at Jefferson Wagner are at the end of their second terms … and cannot run again.

The controversy issue of short term rentals … B and Bs … will again go before the planning commission in a computer meeting on June 30th.

And it’s scheduled to go before the city Council for final tinkering and a vote on August 10th.

A series of routine-looking building proposals go before theMalibu Planning Commission next week.

No major controversies that we cna spot.

One of the requests is for a new wall next to a beach accessway on Broad Beach.

The old wall fell down … the owner put up an illegal temporary screen .. and now the owner wants to put up a legally-conforming wall next to the accessway.

At the civic center. …

Pandemic or no pandemic … another new restaurant is applying for a liquor license.

This one would be in the Park at Cross Creek.

“The Real Coconut” is asking for a beer and wine license … no hard alcohol.

The planning commission will meet on the computers Monday evening.
