Skate Park Opens In Pandemic – Social Distancing And Crowd Limits Will Be Enforced By City Staff

Written by on July 3, 2020

The City’s new Skate Park will open today at noon.

Due to the pandemic … it will have limited hours … from noon to 8.

It will have a maximum capacity of 12 skaters at any one time.

An online reservation system is up … likely already sold out for today.

Skaters can reserve up to one hour of skate time daily … seven days in advance.

One parent of a skateboarder questions opening the skateboard park on the worst day of a global pandemic so far …

Here are her words … voiced by a KBUU reporter.

NEWSCART 75703 SKATE LETTER

“Opening a skatepark for the first time during the height of a pandemic could majorly impact the health of the Malibu community and we need to protect our most at risk residents.

“I know it would be disappointing to the skaters but we need to think about the entire Malibu community.

“Many people are astonished that the City would even consider opening the skate park at this time.  In terms of the Skatepark the timing could not be worse.”

Those are the words of a parent of a skateboarder.

The reservations for today are long gone.

At 6 am there were spots available for tomorrow afternoon … and the next 6 days.

Malibu residents do not get any priority.

But word about the park’s opening can be expected to spread.

And because of the pandemic … city employees will now have to be stationed at the skatepark … to handle the reservations and crowd control.

At the Malibu Community Pool .. it’s still closed.

But the pool … at Malibu High School… they will open for lap swimming next Saturday, July 11 with COVID-19 safety precautions in place.

Registration opens Monday.
