Weekend Road Warriors Flood Malibu Despite Stay At Home Order – 3 Bad Crashes On PCH

Weekend traffic was extreme in Malibu … but the beaches for the most part escaped the drama of Orange and Ventura counties.

But some areas of the city were overrun with tourists … defying park closures … parking rules … and the governor’s stay at home orders.

Residents on Point Dume … for example … were angry that the top of Ppint Dume was overwhelmed.

More than 30 cars were parked illegally at the nature reserve.

One man complained that cars were speeding more than 50 mph.

One of the two lanes on the street was blocked …. pedestrians walking on both sides of the road … drivers honking their horns with loud music. 

People were also hiking in the “CLOSED” Point Dume Preserve Park including their dogs!

And there were lots of cars parked along Westward beach Road

At the major public beaches … however … no people most of the weekend.

For the most part … Photso that we saw showed deserted sands.

Huge crowds clogged traffic and created safety hazards just above malibu … in Ventura County near Point Mugu over the weekend.

And it may have resulted in two serious car crashes … one of them deadly.

The confusing patchwork of regulations led to a confusing situation.

The state parks beaches at County Line and Point Mugu were closed … but the beaches at Deer Creek are not owned by state parks.

And there were huge crowds there.

The Ventura County Star reports that it was a 42-year-old Oxnard man killed on Pacific Coast Highway at Deer Creek Road on Friday morning.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office on Sunday identified him as Javier Carrillo, 42.

He was apparently at fault in a three-vehicle crash that happened around 11:39 a.m. at the Deer Creek Road intersection, 3 miles wqest of the Malibu city limits. The California Highway Patrol told the newspaper that Carrillo had been driving a 2005 International box truck towards Malibu, and for some reason failed to slow down for a large flatbed construction truck, that had slowed down to take a left onto Deer Creek Road.

There is not a left turn lane there, and the left lane is used for passing.  Numerous slow and parked cars are frequently in that area, the first open beach west of Los Angeles County.

For reasons still under investigation, Carrillo failed to slow down and rear-ended the Ford truck, pushing it into the northbound lane, according to the CHP. The stricken flatbed hit an oncoming 2011 Subaru driven by a 76-year-old man from Redondo Beach.

The flatbed truck had been driven by a 61-year-old Thousand Oaks man, who suffered moderate injuries and the Subaru driver had major injuries, the CHP reported.

Both were taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center. 

Carrillo was pronounced dead at the scene.

And last night … a bad two car crash just before sunset near the crowded beach.

A Dodger Challenger and a Ford Focus crashed, and one possibly caught fire.

PCH was closed for more than an hour.

Today at 6:30 a.m., two cars collided in westwrn Malibu, on PCH at Encinal Canyon Road.
