As all of us learn more about COVID-19 and its disease … many had hoped that the advent of wider testing would show that the disease was not so bad.
That the fatality rate would drop … as more tests are administered.
That has not happened yet.
Los Angeles County on Monday said the mortality rate in L.A. County has increased to 2.3% … up from 1.8% a week ago.
Yesterday …. the county confirmed 15 new coronavirus-linked deaths, bringing the county’s total to 147.
Doctor Barbara Ferrer announced 420 confirmed new coronavirus cases in the county, bringing the total to at least 6,360.
The total number of confirmed cases in Malibu is now 9.
As importantly … the infection rate in Malibu is 71 cases per 100 thousand people.
That’s far less than other coastal communities.
Pacific Palisades has a rate of 126 … compared to Malibu’s 71.
Manhattan Beach … 136.
Santa Monica is fairly similar to Malibu … at 79 cases per 100 thousand people.

As the total number of coronavirus cases in California topped 16,000, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday he is confident the state is building up its number of ventilators.
Also … the state is amassing new hospital beds … and the workforce to staff them … to meet the demand of a still-to-come surge in patients that he projects won’t peak until next month.
Now … Newsom says … it’s time for California to help New York.

“Today we announced 500 ventilators from our cache would be sent to the national stockpile immediately to be used in states in need, particular the state of New York.”
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti agrees.
Yesterday … he pointed out that the peak has hit New York … but not yet Los Angeles.

“Here in California there are 11 people being hospitalized for every death. “Compare that to New York where those for people being hospitalized for every death.
“That is good news for California and it may also reflect that in New York there are so few beds, that only the ones being admitted are the ones closest to death.”
The LA mayor is leading the regional COVID 19 effort .
And on Garcetti’s daily broadcast address last night … the Los Angeles Mayor had a blunt warning for us all.
He had just seen the latest federal study.

“Unfortunately the study projection from Washington showed a sharper peak, even if it’s coming sooner, with cumulative deaths of 81,000 nationwide.
“That is a staggering number.
“When you think about 81,000 Americans who will perish, and because it’s coming sooner, it means it is going to be sharper as well.
“Higher numbers of dead, sooner.”
Eric Garcetti warns Southern California that “this will be a critical week in our fight against this crisis.”
The glimmer of good news: another new study found that fewer ventilators, ICU beds, and overall beds may be needed than previously anticipated.
And there appeared to be a slowdown in the uptick in COVID-19 cases, with the 7% increase in L A County the first time since March 14 that it has been in the single digit.
