The New York Times this morning reports that the White House has been given a dire scientific report warning that 2.2 million people in the United States could die from Coronavirus. That estimate tracks with the Chinese death toll estimate … which a UCLA assistant professor extrapolated last week for Malibu. That estimate … between 139 and 244 deaths could be reasonably expected in Malibu alone. Story: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/16/us/coronavirus-fatality-rate-white-house.html

A Pepperdine University student has tested positive for COVID-19.
The student was a participant in the university’s study abroad program in London.
All students in the program have already been sent home .
The university says the student had not returned to the Pepperdine campus.
“The individual flew home from their international program location and did not visit any of the university’s domestic campuses,” the university’s statement said.
Other students who took part in the London program are asked to quarantine themselves for 14 days, per guidelines set out by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This story was reported first in the Malibu Times.

All stores … except grocery stores and drugstores.
All businesses … except gas stations … ordered closed.
baks are open.
Schools will be closed until at least April 20th.
The sheriff’s station lobby in Calabasas has been reopened.
——
Per Sheriff Villanueva and Acting Captain Chuck Becerra, the Malibu/Lost Hills lobby will remain open for service.
Yesterday the sheriff’s office put out a statement that the front doors would be locked.
That decision has been reversed.
However, due to the #COVID19, the sheriff highly encourage everyone to call for service
——.
Quiet pleas for help are being heard on social media and elsewhere … from elderly people or those in Malibu who cannot go out to supermarkets.
The Malibu Foundation and a group called the Mighty Underdogs are offering door-to-door delivery service to those most in need:
the elderly, immunocompromised, immobile, or in medical or self-quarantine.
If you or someone you know need assistance, complete a Request Form at www.MalibuFoundation.org/cv19 or text COVID to 833-407-0117.
Online grocery platforms like Instacart and Amazon’s Whole Foods have pushed back delivery times further and further.
There is chaos in the world of grocery delivery services.
Some Malibu residents say their orders have been only partially filled … and were late.

The Santa Monica Malibu Board of Education approved an emergency resolution yesterday afternoon, approving the closure of all schools, Child Development Services and Adult School for five weeks,.
The planned return is now April 20 … at the earliest.
This closure includes three weeks of regular session and two previously scheduled weeks of spring break.
School officials will be evaluating during this closure to determine whether an extension is recommended, or we may safely return to school on April 20th.
Children enrolled in any SMMUSD school or program will be able to pick up free breakfast and lunch from 7 to 9 a.m. at Webster Elementary in Malibu.
Or … one of three schools in Santa Monica.
SMMUSD families may go to any of these schools even if not enrolled there. All students under the age of 18 will be served. A parent or guardian must be present, except high school students may participate on their own. We are providing grab-and-go bagged meals.
Secondary families (grades 6-12) are being asked to take a short survey regarding access to internet and availability of a device at home while school is closed. We appreciate parents letting us know if either is needed and our team will be in touch with you. We want all students to continue learning during this closure. Direct link: http://bit.ly/2w6xN4z (If you have taken the survey, thank you! No need to take it again.)

Governor Gavin Newsom Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Monday that all California restaurants should close their doors to dine-in customers and that gyms, health clubs and movie theaters should also shutter their operations.
In L A County … and Malibu …, that order is mandatory.
The governor made a brief announcement via Facebook Live yesterdat.
It represents a reversal from just 24 hours earlier as to whether restaurants should curtail their operations.
On Sunday, the governor had said that restaurants should remain open as long as they removed enough seating to achieve six feet or more of separation for their dining patrons — “deep social distancing,” as he called it at the time.
In the City of Malibu … these county health orders are in place.
All indoor public and private gatherings and all outdoor public and private events within a confined space, where at least 50 people are expected to be in attendance at the same time are now prohibited.
Also effective immediately, all permanent food facilities, including restaurants and coffee shops, must limit their services to delivery or take-out services.
No dining will be allowed in any restaurant. All bars and nightclubs that do not serve food must be closed immediately.
All gyms and fitness center must also be closed immediately.
The order does not apply to grocery stores, gas stations or pharmacies which can continue to operate as usual.

The L A County animal shelter over the hill is closed to drop in visitors.
Staff will continue to respond to animal welfare and public safety calls.
— Pet adoptions will be by appointment only.
— If you believe your pet is being cared for at an Animal Care Center, call to schedule an appointment to bring your pet home.
— Owner surrenders will not be received until further notice.
— Those who have lost or found pets are urged to download the SHADOW app, which can also be accessed on the department’s, and, if possible, to foster those pets temporarily.
— The department will not be accepting stray, healthy cats, but any sick or injured cats can still be brought into the ACCs by appointment.
— Animal Control officers will continue to respond to public safety and animal welfare calls such as dangerous dogs, sick/ill animals, police assistance, animal cruelty investigations, patrols, and dead animal reports.

Yesterday … the city manager recommend the closing of public beaches and trails.
Malibu businessman Mike Anderson was one of the few in the audience.
And he said …closing the beaches would be one bad idea.
NEWSCART 75483 MIKE ANDERSON
“I am of course open and willing to do anything that helps stop the spread of the virus.
“But when I heard the city manager potentially talking about closing beaches entrails I decided to step in to say that this is one of the way that people can safely be outdoors in the air and safely away from other people.
“So I would just like to express my desire to keep the beaches open thank you.
And county beaches in Malibu are operated by the state and county … but the city probably has police powers to close them in the interest of public health.
However no such actions have been taken.

And finally …. the city may be shut down … but there is no harm in building the skatepark.
That was the decision by the Malibu city council yesterday.
The council approved a construction contract to pave a section of dirt … just north of the baseball fields at Bluffs Park … to house the city’s Temporary Skate Park.
In a year … when a permanent skate park is finished … this patch of asphalt will become a parking lot.
While some might scoff at the building of a skateboard park in the midst of a pandemic … city council members said there was no reason not to build it.
