Los Angeles now has 32 coronavirus cases, with more evidence of community spread.

Officials confirmed three new cases.

Two of those three have an unidentified source of exposure, further evidence of community spread.

The third new case was a person who was exposed by a close contact who tested positive after attending a conference in Washington, D.C.

One of the patients is hospitalized. The additions bring the total number of cases in L.A. County to 32; this includes four cases in Long Beach and one in Pasadena.

Federal privacy laws are running up against a public clamoring for information about COVID 19 in local communities.

In Malibu … in every city that is responding … people being told that federal privacy laws prevent government officials from revealing if people are testing positive for COVID 19.

Only if there is a public health threat … only if word needs to be broadcast that a certain person may have exposed others … is public notice issued.

Some Southland mayors are unhappy.

Manhattan Beach mayor Richard Montgomery put out a statement … the LA Times reports.

“This is very disturbing and seriously disappointing to say the least.

“Not being able to obtain information about COVID-19 cases in our own community is counterproductive to our common goal of protecting our residents.”

Malibu’s mayor and city manager are also facing questions … from KBUU and from residents in general … about whether any residents had tested positive with COVID-19.

They sent out a news release Tuesday explaining how local leaders aren’t provided with specific details about coronavirus activity.

There are no confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Malibu.

As this morning …  Los Angeles County has 28 confirmed cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), two of which were caused by community spread.

LA County has seen one death.

Ventura County has two confirmed cases.

City Hall is staying open … but nonessential meetings are being cancelled.

The public counter at the building safety department will be open tomorrow.

An appointment system is being set up … to avoid people having to wait in a crowd.

Tonight’s meeting on drawing new district maps will go on as scheduled.

But the Friday night session at Malibu High has been cancelled.

Mayor Karen Farrer says “There is no cause for panic and I understand the inconvenience that this presents, but the City’s number one priority is protecting public safety

“We must do everything possible to be prepared, follow public health officials’ recommended precautions to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, and protect our vulnerable populations.”

All official City Council meetings are on, as scheduled until further notice.

However, the Malibu Planning Commission Regular Meeting scheduled for Monday, March 16 on auxiliary dwelling units …. and the planned Special Meeting scheduled for March 30 on overnight rentals …. are being pushed back to a date uncertain.

For people needing to meet with planners or building inspectors … at the Public Counter …. appointments will be necessary,

This is to prevent large crowds of people waiting at the counter … according to the city.

People are advised to avoid communal eating, meetings or gatherings with more than 50 attendees and all nonessential travel, both international and domestic, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the L.A

Conflicted word about libraries.

The Malibu Library has cancelled all programs and events scheduled through March 31.

This includes the Chinese Calligraphy workshop and Writing Workshop we had scheduled for this Saturday.

We hope to be able to reschedule these and other programs for a later date.

Santa Monica announced its libraries will be closed starting this weekend, with the facilities remaining closed at least through the end of the month.

Look out for your neighbor .. but use caution around elderly neighbors.

The populations who are at higher risk of getting very sick from the virus include seniors and older adults, and people who have serious chronic medical conditions like heart disease, diabetes and lung disease.

Malibu’s Dial-A-Ride program will continue to operate, and Dial-A-Ride vehicles are regularly disinfected.

The Senior Center will remain closed until further notice.

But the city staff will go out to assist any seniors in the community that may need assistance.

Things like food or medicine or toiletries.
