SMMUSD Delays Vote On Banning Kids From Over The Hill As District Faces $11.5 Million Hole

In Santa Monica … the planned vote on a proposal to prohibit kids from outside Malibu … from enrolling in Malibu public schools … is being delayed to March 5th.
One of the school administrators working on the project has had a death in his family.
Many parents are still planning to appear before the school board tomorrow night in Santa Monica.
As we have reported … the Santa Monica Malibu school District faces an $11 million budget shortfall this year.
45 teacher layoff letters may be sent out next month.
School District superintendent Ben Drati is recommending that students from outside the Santa Monica Malibu district boundaries no longer be allowed to attend.
That would cut the class load by more than 10% … once the current students matriculate thru the schools.
Teachers and parents say a 10% student reduction at Malibu high school and middle school … with a combined enrollment now of 1400 students … would be catastrophic.
And parent leaders say it would drop the total student population of elementary and secondary school students further below the 5000 student level.
That’s an important benchmark for the county Agency that is considering Malibu’s request to split off from the Santa Monica school District.
Although the out of district student item has been pulled from tomorrow’s agenda .. The layoffs letter is still on.
