Malibu’s Only Local Daily News … from Radio Malibu …. F-M 99 point 1 K B U U. Good morning … I’m Hans Laetz reporting.
——
The California Coastal Commission is going after the Tivoli Cove condos over blocked coastal access at Latigo Beach … and is playing the race card. The Commission’s staff blames the issue on the fact that the City of Malibu is 84% white people … as opposed to the population of LA County, which is only 26% white.
Really.
——
And … Coastal staff says the City of Malibu has made a big mistake … and is underestimating the effect of global ocean rise on the beaches … and beachfront development. The California Coastal Commission staff says Malibu blew it … by 267 percent … and that Malibu needs to expect the ocean to go up 66 inches in 80 years. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/malibu-planning-commission-underestimates-ocean-level-rise-by-266-percent-coastal-staff-says/

Here we go again.
California State Parks and another state agency are planning to dig out Topanga Lagoon … and recreate a critically-important coastal fish nursery. This happened 10 years ago at Malibu Lagoon … when some locals vociferously objected to a similar lagoon reconstruction. Details: https://www.radiomalibu.net/state-plans-to-dig-out-topanga-lagoon-possibly-relocate-pch-towards-ocean/

Year end crime statistics are out for the City of MAlibu.
And they show an overall increase of 12.7 percent in Class 1 felonies.
Big increases in burglaries from cars … and outbuildings.
The number of reported burglaries from outbuildings grew from 10 the year before … to 17 last year.
And the number of car burglaries increased by nearly 50 percent …. to 156.
Most of those are thefts from cars that are locked by surfers … who then hide their car keys … which the burglars immediately spot.
Petty theft … the theft of items less than 150 dollars … also rose dramatically.
Three people were killed in traffic crashes within city limits last year.
The number of tickets written for hazardous driving went up … from around 48 hundred last year to more than 6 thousand.

The playgrounds at Malibu Elementary School on Point Dume are about to be rebuilt.
The Santa Monica Malibu school district is calling for construction bids on the project.
They estimate the project will cost will be between $250,000 -$300,000.
The work includes demolishing some of the existing playground surfaces … equipment and landscape elements.
The existing vertical log play equipment at the big kids playground will be moved to the little kids playground.
New …modern play equipment will be brought in.
New play and walking surfaces will be installed … including artificial turf and decomposed granite.
Benches and arbors will be renovated.
School officials plan to meet with prospective construction contractors soon … the bids will have to be approved by the school board.

L A County’s former sheriff is this morning waking up in a federal prison near El Paso.
E. Lee Baca for years led the L-A County sheriff’s department.
He fought for yrars to reopen the Malibu sheriff’s station.
And the new sheriff station under construction at the Malibu Civic Center right now is the result of Baca’s efforts to work out a deal with L A County supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky … who considered the Malibu station a waste of tax money.
Baca was once a respected law enforcement leader across the country.
But when he found out the FBI was investigating his department for running a violent … scandal-plagued jail system … he illegally thwarted the federal probe.
Worse … Baca lied to federal prosecutors who were investigating the mess.
The entire mess led to the election of a new reform minded sheriff …. but copunty supervisors believe that many of those reforms have been reversed by yet another new sheriff … Alex Villanueva.
Baca is now 77 years old.
He has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
And he has begin serving a three year prison term.

Power company critics are jumping all over Southern California Edison … for its report on how much utility executives get in bonuses.
The state legislature has required SCE to disclose bonus pay … and whether its executives bonuses are linked to safety … or only profits.
As KBUU reported last month … SCE issued its mandatory report on executive bonuses and fire safety last month.
Now TURN … an electric company watchdog group … also points out that SCE failed to meet state law requirements.
In documents obtained by KBUU this morning … TURN says the Edison company fails to apply safety standards and goals … to the amount of ratepayer money given to executives as bonuses for profits … as opposed to safety … which eats into profits.
The CPUC has not said what it will do … in the fact of protests that it is not enforcing the legislature’s laws on paying its bosses bonuses … after the company caused deadly fires in Southern California.

The Witness Tree is going to have to be cut down.
The hundred year old oak tree stood for decades over Paramount Ranch … the old movie set in the Santa Monica Moutnains north of Malibu.
The old tree has been in dozens … hundreds of movies.
Old westerns.
T V series.
“The Cisco Kid”
“Little House On The Prairie.”
“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”.
Even in “Westworld” on HBO.
The movie set burned int he Woolsey Fire … so did the tree.
And even though it put out a few leaves this year …. arborists form the National Park Service say the tree is dying.
And they tell the Ventura County Star that it’s going to have to be cut down.
The National Park Service is inviting the public”to say goodbye” to the tree at an open house Saturday afternoon.
The tree is expected to be cut down in mid-February.
The old tree’s wood will be cut up … and used as benches, signs and hitching posts in the Western Town as it’s rebuilt.
The Witness Tree goodbye will be this Saturday from 2 to 4 at Paramount Ranch.
That’s on Cornell Road at Mulholland Highway … near Malibou lake.
