The Santa Monica City Council is looking at empty parking lots … and commercial spaces along major streets …. as places for 9 thousand new apartments and condos in the next decade,
And 50 percent of the 9,000 units Santa Monica will be required to zone for between 2021 and 2029 must be affordable to very low- and low-income households.
The state of California has a huge housing shortage … and there are already mandates in place to require cities with abundant jobs and access to transit to find places for people to live.
Santa Monica in particular has a huge jobs surplus … and housing deficit.
Look at the every morning traffic jams on westbound Santa Monica Freeway to see evidence of the thousands of people commuting into Santa Monica. The City Council in Santa Monica agreed Tuesday night that development on major boulevards and near transit must be taller and denser.
The Santa Monica Daily Press reports that city council members say the city should allow developers to build more units on a site in exchange for including more affordable units in the project, streamline the development approval process and eliminate or dramatically reduce parking requirements.
The mayor wants Santa Moncia to use public land could be used for affordable housing.
And they asked city staff to explore the possibility of appropriating the DMV parking lot in Santa Monica for use as a housing development.
