MHS Demolition And Rebuild Concept Goes To School Board Tonight
Written by 991KBU on November 7, 2019
The complete redesign and rebuild of Malibu High School and Malibu Middle School goes before the school board tonight.
The plan has generated very little controversy or discussion … in a neighborhood that is concentrated on rebuilding after half the houses were burned down a year ago.
Meeting at Malibu City Hall … the school board is being asked to sign off a a total restructuring of the aging campus … on Morning View Drive.
Virtually every existing building would be torn down … including at least two buildings completed just 15 years ago.
The aging swimming pool … the new gym … the two story classroom building built a little more than a decade ago … the auditorium that was carved out a a lunchroom …all would be scraped away.
The only things to be saved … are the existing athletics fields … the one classroom building that was opened this year … and the two buildings currently under construction.
The rough plan features a large U-shaped drop-off quad designed to support improved traffic circulation along Morning View Drive.
Rough concepts for the campus layout have been drawn up after 50 community and school meetings in Malibu.
Rebuilding Malibu Middle and High School will take eight to ten years.
The construction will be partially funded by Measure M, approved by Malibu voters last fall.
But another bond issue may be necessary to complete it.
There has been no apparent opposition voiced to the plan from the surrounding Malibu Park community.
The school board will discuss this concept … and vote on pressing ahead with hiring an architect …. tonight at 6:30 at Malibu City Hall.
