Malibu Moves To 100% Renewable Green Power

Written by on October 29, 2019

Malibu will move to 100 percent renewable electricity.

The city council last night voted to shift the default option for every electric customer in the city … to a 100 percent green electricity supply.

The cost will be about 8 percent more than the current power rates.

But customers will have ample opportunities to decide to stay at the current rate … or even drop to an even lower electric rate … by choosing to use coal-fired electricity.

Ted Barnacke … chairman of the Clean Power Alliance … was questioned about this by city councilman Jefferson Wagner.

BARNACKE:  “The option of opting out or opting down remains regardless what you decide about your default level.”

WAGNER: “So the individual surf shop owner can choose his options next month or whenever it is clarified?

BARNACKE: “That’s right.

WAGNER: “Thank you.”

City residents and business owners will be sent four pieces of mail explaining the change … and spelling out the details.

Malibu joins 10 other cities … including Oxnard and Santa Monica … as choosing to move to 100 percent clean green energy as its source of power.

The electricity will still be delivered by Southern California Edison … and customers can still pick SCE to generate their power … which costs about 10 percent more.

The vote was 4 to 1 … with Rick Mullen opposed.

He has said in the past that he does not think the move will be effective.
